It might have escaped your notice that 2012 is Octink’s 50th Anniversary!
It’s been quite a journey. CEO Will Tyler’s father Tony started the business – literally with a brush! – and grew it into a large signage maintenance company serving garages across the UK. When Will took over the business it had contracted back to a small business of three sign-writers.
Octink is now starting this landmark year as one of the leading companies in the display industry, bolstered by continuous growth and a strong management team, and with a great reputation for sustainability. With the Olympics around the corner, 2012 is already showing signs of being very successful, and with new innovations and projects in the pipeline, our 50th year could be our best yet!
Octink has recently appointed Stuart Gingell to the new role of Business Director Events to bring extra strength and expertise to this fast-growing sector of our business. With a strong agency background, Stuart has worked in the event and marketing sectors for 12 years. He joins us from global event marketing agency George P. Johnson, where he was Project Director, Client Branding for leading IT and telecommunications clients.
Octink has started the new year with a bang, becoming a Fogra-certified large format printer. Fogra certification is an internationally recognised mark of distinction and demonstrates our commitment to the highest standards in print quality.
The achievement follows a significant investment in GMG software at the end of 2011, providing internal controls to create profiles for every printer and media combination currently in use. We carry out weekly re-calibration of those printers to ensure we consistently hit the precise colour standards and accurate reproduction of a designer’s original work.
The Octink logo and brand identity was created by branding specialists Felt in 2009. We are delighted that this work has been recognised and featured by IdN, the international publication for creative people.
Octink is delighted to have received the Contractor of the Year Award 2011 from Crest Nicholson Regeneration, one of the UK’s leading property developers.
Crest Nicholson’s awards recognise the contribution of its suppliers, consultants and subcontractors in making its regeneration schemes a success. Octink has worked with Crest Nicholson for many years and is currently providing the signage, hoardings and marketing suites for its major regeneration projects in Birmingham, Bristol, Bath and Southampton. Deborah Aplin, Managing Director of Crest Nicholson Regeneration, commented “I would like to congratulate Octink on winning our Contractor of the Year Award, which was very well deserved. The support that you provide around the clock is very much appreciated and shows that you are very much part of the team.”
The award was presented at the inaugural Crest Nicholson Regeneration Awards & Charity Event, which raised £18,796 for the Variety Club to fund a sunshine bus for disabled and disadvantaged children.

We supplied and installed this giant banner for Superdry at the Whitgift Shopping Centre in Croydon, its 68th UK store. The banner weighed in at a massive 16 meters x 12 meters and follows the striking advertising hoarding we installed at Superdry’s new flagship London store on Regent Street.
We’ve just completed the latest seasonal display at the London Eye. The installation followed a Halloween theme with an array of printed window displays. Many of the props arranged around the witch’s cauldron were made, decorated and installed by our team. We worked closely with the client’s design team to develop this stunning night time effect.
We decorated the perimeter advertising hoarding for Superdry’s new flagship store on London’s Regent Street. The hoarding comprising over 500 square meters of the latest Superdry campaign imagery was printed in house and direct to substrate using our Inca Spyder flatbed printers. To minimise disruption to the general public, the hoarding was completed over 3 days, working at night between midnight and 5am.
We are delighted to announce that we have joined the British Sign & Graphics Association (BSGA) after almost 50 years of operating in the sign industry. Octink was at Old Spitalfields Market in East London over the August Bank Holiday for the Vans Downtown Showdown 2011 and the third edition of their now legendary International Skateboarding Spectacle. Working with full service event and activation agency Innovision, we printed and installed the event branding comprising the decoration of special customised ramps, bunting, the pillar wraps and all the event banners, all designed to reflect London in a bygone Victorian era of Jack the Ripper, with its cobbled streets, gas lamps, Gothic Churches and The River Thames.
Octink peddlers Richard Tyler and Barry Harwood joined the Golden Mile Transport Group’s ‘Golden Mile Flyers’ for this years and the 6th Brompton World Championship held as part of the Blenheim Palace Festival of Cycling. We’ve recently returned from the latest Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex. As an official supplier of signs and graphics to the event organisers, the Festival of Speed has fast become one of the UK’s most prestigious motor shows, and we are delighted our involvement has now extended into the third successive year.
In addition to the main way-finding track side signage and event branding, we were able to assist some of the key sponsors and partners to the event such as TAG Heuer, the Official Timing Partner for the festival. We provided the graphics and impressive external printed banners for the new and exclusive boutique designed and built by Losberger, which fast became the centre of attention for many of the visitors to the festival.

Other highlights for us included the head turning Morgan 3 Wheeler – Superdry Edition. Unlike the digital based graphics that we have supplied Superdry for their retail outlets, this was a hark back to the days of traditional signwriting with everything on the car impressively handpainted and finished to the very highest detail.

Octink is excited to announce a new partnership with conservation charity, Buglife, the only organisation in Europe devoted to the conservation of invertebrates – from beetles to bees, worms to woodlice and jumping spiders to jellyfish. In the UK alone, there are over 40,000 species of invertebrates and many of these are under threat of extinction. Worldwide, 150,000 species could quite literally be wiped out by 2050 unless organisations like Buglife are supported in their vital work.
The partnership will develop from our obvious strengths, ie. supplying graphics and event displays, into many other avenues as we encourage our staff to volunteer, we raise funds and raise awareness amongst our clients and suppliers. We will also try to leverage greater support for Buglife through our existing community partners.
“It is a privilege to work with such driven, passionate campaigners at Buglife and we will strive to match their enthusiasm and dedication to this cause. We are 100% committed to this partnership, to raising their profile and helping them as much as we can.” William Tyler, CEO Octink.
Commenting for Buglife, Outreach Officer Dale Harrison said “Buglife are delighted to be supported by Octink, an award winning display specialist recognised in the Sunday Times Best Green Company list since 2009. Octink is passionate about securing a diverse and wildlife-rich planet for future generations and we look forward to a long and fruitful partnership”

For the third successive year Octink has taken its place as one of The Sunday Times Best Green Companies for 2011, a list of the top 60 UK companies. Octink continues to lead the way as the sole representative for the signage and display industry and this year achieved special merit in the report for having the greenest employees and also for having a management team that leads by example.
Perception of the company as being genuinely ‘green’ is also growing, boosted by our event recycling services that have proved successful across many clients and industries - no more so than at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show.
Since we launched Octink’s website in the Summer of 2009, over 18 months ago, we’ve had over 17,000 visitors to the website. The most popular section, by far, has been our portfolio. We’ve been working hard to improve the photography and content and we’ve now got some case studies of which we are really proud. Below is a list of the top ten case studies on our website.
If you have any suggestions about how we can improve the way we display our work on this website then we’d love to hear from you. You can leave a comment at the bottom of this post.

Octink has played an integral part in the launch of a new pop-up cafe and restaurant in the heart of Brentford High Street. The Docking Station will offer a variety of drinks and food as well as immersive video gaming experiences on the latest consoles including Xbox Kinect and Sony PlayStation and exists thanks to the inspiration and hard work of young people from across Hounslow borough in conjunction with local businesses and community partners.
The recipe of food, drink and video games was the inspiration of students at Hounslow Manor School, winners of the Social Enterprise High Street Challenge – a local pilot scheme challenging young people in Hounslow secondary schools to develop a business plan for an empty shop in Brentford High Street in just eight weeks. Staff from Octink were involved in the entire selection process, a video of which is available to watch here.
Octink has been creating pop-up environments for a long time and, together with our vast experience and ability to meet challenging deadlines, we were able to provide free materials, time and expertise to assist construction students from the Feltham Skills Centre in creating a vibrant and welcoming cafe. Octink worked alongside The Hounslow Education Business Partnership and other key community partners to deliver this project.
Will Tyler, CEO Octink and trustee of Docking Station commented “We are delighted to have worked in collaboration with other community partners to help make this fantastic project reality. The Docking Station promises to inspire and encourage young people throughout the local area for the foreseeable period, and is a bright and welcome addition to Brentford High Street.”
Two marketing suites designed for Barratt East London by Octink - literally from the ground up! - have been launched to great acclaim.
The prestigious Waterside Park development in the Royal Docks, E16, a joint venture with Taylor Wimpey opened in March to spectacular reviews and the new marketing suite at Renaissance in Lewisham attracted over 200 visitors to its opening earlier this year, achieving 12 sales on the day.
Although Octink has created cutting edge interiors for marketing suites for many years, these recent projects took our work a step further; we produced the concept designs and managed the build programme, in addition to designing and fitting out the interiors.
Stuart Lilley, Senior Sales Manager at Barratt East London, comments: “Marketing suites often suffer from looking remarkably similar, which lessens their impact on potential buyers. We wanted to create a wow factor and give a real statement of intent in the exterior appearance and interior design to provide the ideal customer experience and reflect the quality of the developments that we build. The entire project worked very successfully; it achieved a seamless approach to the development of the marketing suites and was a very cost effective solution.”

Octink recently supported the students of Kingston University at this years Ecobuild, where Rematerialise a library of sustainable materials was showcased to great acclaim.
Our own Agnese de Masi, a former interior design student at Kingston University, has been instrumental in facilitating donations of off-cuts and other materials used to make hoardings and displays to the university’s 3D Workshop, further enhancing our strong reputation for environmental responsibility. The collaboration at Ecobuild involved the use of such materials in the design of the stand together with digitally printed displays and a Q&A session on sustainability with Will Tyler our CEO. Watch now the an interview with Will on the Ecobuild stand.
Will Tyler commented “the students at Kingston University are all future designers and are already collaborating with big brands on very real design situations. I am sure that having our name in mind will be a good thing in the future - brand building as part of a sustainability engagement is a great win win situation for us, and i am delighted to have received public thanks from Kingston University for our contribution”.
On a momentous day for everyone at Octink, the Prime Minister, David Cameron was welcomed to our West London premises to discuss a series of potential reforms to the employment tribunal system. The London Chamber of Commerce was instrumental in setting up this historic visit. CEO Will Tyler was delighted to give the Prime Minister the full guided tour of our production facility. Commenting after the visit Will Tyler said:
“For the Prime Minister to come and see our business in action and to be able to talk to him about the everyday pressures we face is just fantastic. We are a business that is passionate about doing things the right way, and I am pleased that the Government has announced these changes to the tribunal system. This can only help to remove some of the strains associated with running SMEs, and also renews our confidence in the recruitment market”.
A new photo installation has been launched by the Brentford High Street Steering Group, at a meeting attended by Mary Macleod MP. The work is by urban and arts photographer Peter Kyte, and the result of a partnership between the Steering Group, Watermans, Octink and Ballymore. The work titled “Thames Low: Brentford” clusters a series of evocative images of the Thames at low tide in Brentford and the boats that cover its banks.
Octink project managed the production of these large format digital prints, and carried out the installation converting the original photographs artwork into a highly impactful hoarding. This printed hoardings follow the Windows on Brentford project and represents yet another community engagement where Octink has helped to brighten up the local area with digital art.
Andrew Dakers, Chair of Brentford High Street Steering Group said:
“This new art installation has brightened up what was an increasingly grotty corner of Brentford High Street, but is now transformed. Photographer Peter Kyte rose to the challenge well and has produced a range of beautiful images that capture beautifully the colours and textures of the Thames at low tide. The project is another great example of the community working together to make Brentford an even more brilliant place to explore. ”
Supporting the local community, particularly young people, has long been an important part of Octink’s corporate and social responsibility activity. So when we needed a short film to advertise our business, it seemed a great opportunity to give local students real-life business experience by asking them to produce it.
We approached Heston Community School, a specialist visual arts school, through Hounslow’s Education Business Partnership, which brings together education, business and community organisations to help prepare young people for working life,
As a result, our film project was incorporated into the syllabus of the two-year Creative Media Diploma course. Working in groups, 18 and 19 year old students mirrored the work of a professional production company, by taking a brief and managing every aspect of the work, from presenting initial proposals through to final production.
The students not only honed their creative skills, but learned first-hand about planning, budgeting and teamwork. They were supported by Hanif Kahn, founder and director of Video Shoot Productions in Heston, who provided guidance, advice and access to the latest video equipment. Hanif says: “Projects like this are invaluable in giving young people real life business experience that helps them make an informed decision about whether they want to pursue a career in the industry and, for those who do, it looks great on their CV for future employers.”
Steve Hook, art teacher at Heston Community School, adds “our students really enjoyed the work and learned a huge amount along the way. Opportunities like this provide excellent vocational experience and are so much better than making up fictitious companies! We’re enormously grateful to Octink and Hanif for their support and look forward to continuing the relationship in future.”
The students’ finished films are impressive and compare well with a professionally produced film. They can be seen on YouTube if you’re having difficulty viewing them here. Visit http://bit.ly/8ZWkOI and http://bit.ly/9dSHVG
Octink is a BITC CommunityMark company and is committed to an on-going program of engagements with local schools and community groups.
On July 5th Octink celebrated its 1st anniversary, a year in which significant progress has been made in developing new markets and customers. Created by FELT, the Octink brand identity sort to achieve a positioning that could release our core strengths as an intelligent and knowledgeable business partner that is able to think outside the box and importantly offer a full service package. A new logo, stationery, uniforms, vehicle livery, and a stand out graphical symbol in an octopus were just some of the elements that helped bring everything to life, as did a fantastic website and content strategy both developed and now managed by our sister company Soda.
Add in our achievements in gaining ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and the success of yet another place on the Sunday Times Green list for the second year in succession, Octink has got off to a flying start!

For the second year running, we have won a place in the prestigious Sunday Times Best Green Companies List. 18th overall is a jump of 27 places on last year, reflecting a significant improvement in our environmental performance and employee engagement. You can view Octink’s individual Best Green Companies profile here.
We have risen to the third best manufacturing company overall. We also appeared in the top ten of seven key measurement tables, some of which are highlighted below:
“The competition provides a benchmark for our environmental activities and is key for business development. I am particularly pleased with the reaction of our employees; it’s clear that everyone is acting green and engaging with us to develop business winning credentials.”

The latest ‘Windows on’ project has once again allowed Octink, a display specialist to continue our work with budding young designers, this time with the talented children from Ivybridge as part of our community investment programme, and in conjunction with Hounslow Homes, Isleworth Extended Services and the Brentford City Learning Centre. The ‘Windows on’ projects allow us to engage with a collection of young adults across the Borough to add an artistic twist to their local environment, and often improve the outlook and appearance of either rundown buildings or community neighbourhoods. Feedback to date suggests that the addition of artwork to any area is always welcome, and in addition serves to provide areas with a sense of youthful soul, ambition, and respect.
Everyone at Octink is hugely proud of the work provided to date, and particularly impressed with the understanding of computer skills and design programs that the local students have demonstrated. The work is of such a high quality and are fast becoming locally renowned works of art! As we look forward the hope is that one day we will be able to hone these skills in our own workplace on permanent basis as we continue to address the issue of employability locally. This is very encouraging for our future development of our business, and hopefully that of the students too.
Once presented and critiqued the designs were printed direct to substrate via our Inca Spyder large format printers. All materials used can be recycled in the future.
Commenting on the outcome of the project, Debbie Squires from Isleworth Extended Services (ISLES) said “Your support once again is invaluable. Your talk to the children and their parents about Octink and the design process was simply superb, and never fails to inspire me”.

Octink is please to announce the successful completion of two high profile marketing suite projects. Both Dalston Square marketing suite for Barratt Homes, and Priors Hall Park marketing suite were completed on time, to budget, and to the delight of our customers. At Priors Hall Park we partnered with De Boer and Pelican Studios to manage the entire interior fit out of a scheme of tented showroom space, while at Dalston Square the brief was to develop and improve the existing marketing suite space and to design and decorate a new show apartment. Both schemes included an array of bespoke furniture, display graphics, wall coverings, and custom-built displays all expertly project managed and installed by our site teams.
William has written an article giving his readers some tips on how to make marketing suites work harder for your business over on his blog. He also talks about the Priors Hall Park marketing suite project in more depth.

Octink has won its first major contract with Slough Borough Council to provide printed advertising hoardings as part of the Heart of Slough project. Heart of Slough is the £450 million regeneration of the centre of Slough, under a joint venture between Slough Borough Council, the Homes and Communities Agency and Development Securities. 29 acres of the town centre, between the railway station and main shopping centre, are being redeveloped. A new road layout will be introduced together with a tree-lined boulevard that will provide pedestrian friendly routes. In addition to new homes and offices, there will be a brand new bus station and a new community space that will house Slough’s main library. Work is due to be completed in 2012.
The project was formally launched in March, when construction work began on the new bus station. Octink has provided 188 metres of advertising hoardings surrounding the construction site, which display messages and images to inform and inspire local people with the vision for the site. In keeping with Octink’s green credentials, the advertising hoardings have been made of materials suitable for recycling. Octink hopes to continue working with Slough Borough Council, as future requirements for hoardings are identified.
The Exhibition News Awards is the industry’s leading event recognising excellence in the world of exhibitions, and Octink has been shortlisted as a finalist in The Green Award category in recognition of the signage re-use and recycling regime it successfully operated at The 2009 Chelsea Flower Show for The Royal Horticultural Society.
The ultimate winner in this category will be announced on Friday 7th May, and decided by the votes of Exhibition News readers. And while delighted to be a finalist, Octink CEO William Tyler is now calling on business friends and colleagues to cast their vote for the Octink submission to celebrate sustainable business practice and the huge environmental savings that were made at this prestigious event.
The 2009 Budget announced that landfill tax is set to rise by £8 per tonne at least until April 2013. That is a net increase of around 20% per year, which means that if you were paying £50,000 for waste removal in 2009 you could be paying around £105,000 in 2013 for the same service.
We simply have to stop throwing things away and, instead, find alternative recyclable products and sustainable methods of production. We encourage, advise and educate our customers how to do this with their signs, graphics and other aspects of their event branding. We believe that diverting your waste away from landfill will not only benefit the environment, it will also benefit you both financially and, as part of your social responsibility policy, make your event sustainable.
Octink is the first UK signage and display specialist to offer its customers a complete recycling process: we have called this Octink R3. We really do recover, recycle and reuse!
We use the latest solvent-free latex inkjet printers to print onto a wide range of recycled and recyclable products. We continue to develop our closed loop product range where your signage is collected and recycled into blank sign making materials, ready for the next project.
While closed loop recycling remains the Holy Grail of sustainable good practice, whenever we can, we use recycled or recyclable products as alternatives to traditional, more environmentally-damaging products. For example, we now use LED lighting over neon and use wheat banners or Oleflex as a eco-friendly replacement for PVC.
We try very hard to ensure that even products that can’t be recycled get reused. For example Dibond, an aluminium/plastic composite, is ground into pellets and reused in low grade aluminium products while PVC banners are turned into protective matting for children’s play areas.
We manage the delivery and removal of signage and other materials to and from events and exhibitions. We even audit our customers’ waste reclamation and recycling for their projects and produce detailed reports for them.
We aim to reduce landfill and cut material wastage wherever we can. You can read more about Octink’s environmental policies here or download product sheets of all our recyclable products.
The Central Office of Information (COI) is the Government’s centre of excellence for marketing and communications, and has recently overhauled its framework (roster) of live event agencies, selecting Octink as one of only four agencies able to bid for signage design and production for large scale events, exhibitions and road shows.
Over 1300 agencies were evaluated through a rigorous procurement process, each evaluated on the basis of proven expertise and experience of the company and its staff, quality of service, financial soundness, pricing structure and other organisational information related to procurement requirements.
Simon Hughes Director of Live Events, whose team undertook the exercise said “My team is really looking forward to working with the new framework agencies in what will be a challenging period. We’re very confident that we have the best mix of talent to help us devise great event solutions for our clients.”
William Tyler, CEO of Octink, commented “Octink is proud to be selected for this world-class framework and we are very excited at the opportunity of working with the live events team on a broad range of projects in the coming 4 years”.
It was with some satisfaction that we learnt last week that we have retained the Green Guardian Award for Hounslow! This local borough award recognises those in the local community that are passionate about raising environmental awareness whilst supporting green initiatives and projects. Octink has again been named Green Business of the Year for the borough, and just like last year we now move onto represent Hounslow at the regional final at the end of February where we will be up against the greenest businesses in South West London.
Great news today as the orders have been placed for a suite of new HP photographic large format printers, all due to arrive before the end of this year. For high quality (up to 2400 dpi) indoor applications the DesignJet Z6100 will output posters, fine art and high end photographic applications at incredible print speeds. Next up is the DesignJet L25500 large format printer and its big brother the DesignJet L65500 wide format printer which will give us huge versatility speed and quality for large format outdoor and indoor applications such as banners, event signage and point of sale displays. Both are low solvent printers which use water-based latex inks to produce odorless prints using consumables that are fully recyclable, further helping us to reduce the impact of our printing on the environment.
Above all we will achieve a much improved quality and better vibrancy of colour than we have ever been able to achieve before, while the new durable inks will help to reduce the need for overlaminating in many cases. The large format printers have on-board spectrometers and the printheads are interchangeable, which means improved colour consistency and no more banding issues.
We hope to have everything up and running during the course of January, and would be happy to show any interested parties our new print capability in action. Please contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for further information.
The huge site hoardings you see running around new developments present us with a perfect opportunity for demonstrating the power of great large format digital design and print, as long as the hoarding structure is well-prepared and built to last. At Octink we have, over the last 10 years, worked on many of the stand-out retail and residential hoarding schemes created in London, Birmingham, Bristol and Manchester.
We have developed a hoarding specification which hoarding contractors should aim towards. These specifications provide the necessary ingredients for a perfect canvas on which to display a successful advertising campaign. There is however a structural hurdle to overcome before starting a hoarding project. New developments often take place in exposed, and sometimes remote, locations and the resulting implications from wind damage are huge, including structural damage and loss, with possible injuries to members of the public. Periodic maintenance addressing structural integrity, as well as cosmetic appearance, is, therefore, a vital for any company seeking to achieve creative impact in the safest and most responsible way. Sites are expected to run all prospective advertising hoarding details past the temporary works engineer to ensure that the final specification matches the location.
Advertising hoardings will potentially be on display for months with thousands of prospective clients passing by and the power of a great hoarding design complementing a scheme is not to be underestimated. It is worth spending time when designing a site hoarding as this is normally the largest piece of marketing material you will produce during a campaign. Your audience will not stand and read a long essay about the site or advert, so short snappy copy broken up with great attention-grabbing imagery is much more effective than copy heavy designs. Large images or illustrations are a great way of drawing attention to the site as are the introduction of inventive lighting using LEDs, used increasingly to add a extra sparkle. Here are some recent examples of site hoardings that Octink has produced.
We can help with any aspect of advertising hoardings from planning, through design and printing, to installation. Let us know how we can help or leave your comments below with your own experiences on producing printed site hoardings.

Octink has today joined London’s premier carbon club by signing up to a pioneering carbon management scheme backed by the Mayor of London, the Green500, which aims to address carbon emissions and take action against climate change.
The Green500 is an environmental programme funded by the London Development Agency to support the Mayor’s target to cut emissions in the capital by 60 per cent by 2025. The Green500 intends to bring together responsible organisations from across the capital with a significant presence in London and encourage them to work together to reduce the city’s carbon emissions.
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, said: “I warmly welcome Octink to the Green500. This carbon cutting club, comprising of London’s top businesses, is leading the charge to tackle climate change. Becoming more energy efficient will reap dividends for the planet and help make companies leaner in tough economic times.”
Will Tyler, CEO of Octink, said: “We are very excited about joining London’s Green500, a scheme that shares our desire to take action on carbon emissions and the impact areas that exist right on our doorstep. We hope that being a part of the Green500 will assist us in working with, and encouraging our suppliers, clients, and employees to take similar action on carbon management in the future.”
As we approach the festive shopping season, we are hopeful that some of our best ever window displays will be on show throughout the capital and for many of London’s foremost fashion designers and retailers. With a wealth of visual merchandising experience behind us, I have written the following insight into how we work prompted by the following questions by local design students.
When working on the visual merchandising projects we always consider the overall design of the job when deciding upon the final production method. We aim to create displays within the budget restraints but not compromising on the intended visual effect. Creative Directors at clients such as Joseph regularly supply us with a vision in sketch form and we suggest the best production method to achieve the desired effect.
We often work on some very creative window displays where it is crucial that our project management, studio, production and installation teams are involved from the outset and all have an input to the project. Ultimately timely delivery and attention to the smallest of details make visual merchandising projects a success.
Retail display work is very fast moving, and as such our experience is of having to operate and deliver within very tight deadlines. As we approach the festive season, window displays in particular are ever changing, and we may only be given a matter of hours to deliver, often in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day!
Definitely! This sort of work is challenging and really gets the creative side out of everyone in our team, as well as allowing us to impart our experience and knowledge for the benefit of the project.

On 22 June 2009, Business in the Community announced that Octink were one of only nine new companies that were successful in achieving the CommunityMark standard for community investment excellence. We joined the roll of 20 pioneers that achieved the CommunityMark in 2008, and are proud that our efforts have contributed to a collective investment of over £42 million in our respective communities.
At Octink we have been engaged in activities involving employee volunteering, corporate giving and fundraising, gifts in kind and other commercial initiatives, specifically with local community groups and schools. We are now pleased to publically disclose the details of these activities on our website as part of our on-going committment to promote the CommunityMark Standard to our friends and colleagues, client base, and supplychain. It recently struck me that with autumn almost upon us just how busy we have been in recent months. This summer we have worked on major events such as RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival, and most recently at the UK School Games where I took the opportunity to spend the entire build up and breakdown of this event on site with our installation teams. This was a fantastic experience and reminded just how proficient our site teams have become in project management and delivery aside from the usual excellent quality, value and advice we like to bring to projects.
We have started winning awards too, especially for sustainability and recycling. Winning South West London’s Green Guardian Award, beating other companies from five London Boroughs, led us to The Sunday Times Green Company 2009 Awards. We came 6th in manufacturing and 45th overall for the whole of the UK. We are certainly trying to do our bit to reduce the impact of our business on the environment, and at both the Chelsea Flower Show and the UK School Games we were able to recycle and set aside for re-use vast amounts of signage and branding material that would have previously cost a small fortune to dispose of to landfill!
So all in all quite a summer, and not to forget our recent transition from Allsignsgroup to Octink, a rebrand that I hope will clearly position our core products and services away from our traditional remit as just a sign company.

I was delighted that Mike was able to attend a prestigious event at the House of Lords recently to receive our latest achievment, the Business in the Community CommunityMark award.
We are one of just nine new companies who were successful in achieving the national standard of community investment excellence. The list new achievers for 2009 includes BSkyB, Cadbury, EDF Energy, and Liverpool Football Club to name just a few, and through our combined effort have invested over £42 million in our respective communities through employee volunteering, corporate giving and fundraising, gifts in kind and other initiatives for the benefit of over 871,000 young people nationwide and 213,000 people in vulnerable or disadvantaged communities.
Mike is shown here accepting the trophy with:
• Stephen Howard, Chief Executive of Business in the Community
• Angela Smith, Minister of State for the Third Sector
Young Brits at Art 2009 is a competition in which 11-19-year-olds are invited to create pictures that express their thoughts and feelings about living in Britain today. As such we were delighted to support Stephanie Winn, a local student from Gumley House Convent School in Hounslow who was not only one of the lucky 10 winners out of more than 1639 entries nationwide, but was also named as a top three finalist!
We helped Stephanie by reproducing her stunning, original, life sized painting at the size required for the competition. We supplied a high quality print on archival “hahnemuhle” paper. The winning entries were put on display at the awards ceremony which was held at the Purcell room in the South bank centre. Stephanie was featured on several national news programmes with her winning entry, and looks set to have a fantastic future as a fine artist.
This is just the latest example of where we are happy to offer our time and expertise to assist and encourage creative young talent within our local community.
Established in 1961, our business has evolved over the years. Our recent name change, from Allsignsgroup to Octink, reflects a desire to move with the times; to promote bold, intelligent thinking across our entire business and above all, to help our customers get the very best out of our partnership.
The use of the Octopus to strengthen our brand delivery reflects in part our desire to mirror this invertebrate’s bold characteristics, its intelligence, and uniquely its ability to change in accordance with its environment. To achieve the striking octopus photography deployed across our branding we commissioned award winning photographer Tim Flach to develop a series of highly focused and vivid images. The amazing results are to be deployed across our vehicle fleet, website, and promotional literature.

On Wednesday night Will and I attended the Sunday Times Best Green Companies Awards presentation in central London, and although we didn’t quite manage to walk away with one of the headline awards we were delighted to be welcomed into their exclusive list of just 60 green champion companies.
In fact we were officially ranked the 6th best manufacturing company in the UK and 45th in the overall list of winners, which I feel for a small company with a medium to high environmental impact is a fantastic achievement!
Once again our company commitment to signage recycling, and ever growing staff engagement to our environmental policy is what continues to set us apart.
We’re committed to building our ‘green’ credentials, and hope that more success and great nights like this will follow!
The judges commented “Employees have definitely got it. Workers give the firm positive green scores of 99% and 96% respectively for knowing where to put waste and which waste goes where. They are aware of its environmental green policy (92%, and a top 10 score) and of the implications of the work they do (85%). All this contributes to staff believing Allsignsgroup does a lot for the environment and everything it can to minimise its impact on it (both 90% scores).”
The evolution of Allsignsgroup into Octink is now well underway, and proudly just one of many recent achievements that we have recently had cause to celebrate as a company. Our new branding represents a desire to be bolder and more confident about the wide range of products and services we offer, and I hope our new vehicle livery for one will certainly have a big impact. The changes are far reaching, and will build upon our reputation and ability to deliver fantastic events across a number of industry sectors.
It seems that many good things are happening at once, and following on from our recognition as a Sunday Times Best Green Company, we have now also achieved ISO 14001, a national standard for environmental management and further recognition of our committment to environmental sustainability. I am confident that a combination of these awards and our most recent achievement, the Business in the Community’s CommunityMark standard will further help to align ourselves firmly against the sustainability objectives of many existing and prospective clients.
Attending today’s annual May Day Network event held at Billingsgate, I felt a great deal of satisfaction that our company is fast becoming a leading light in tackling environmental impact, and although small in scale the efforts we are all making really does make a difference to global climate change.
The whole company can be proud of our collective efforts to date, and my job of making a series of environmental pledges to the Prince’s May Day Network was relatively simple. In short out of the 6 main action points requested of the UK business community we are already taking action on the following:
In addition I have pledged to take the following action by May 2010:
For me the whole day was brought into perspective by HRH Prince of Wales who warned that the May Day global distress call is still going unanswered and that the ‘doomsday clock’ really is ticking. Mixed with this message of urgency, his other message was to promote the business case for environmental action and community engagement, both aspects that we are pro-actively engaging and that are already providing real benefits in this time of recession.
The recent February half term saw the launch of the Windows on Brentford Project, an art based activity hosted by the Brentford City Learning Centre to engage local young people through digital arts and connect them to their local environment.
Working with young people from a number of local schools including Marlborough, Isleworth Town and Isleworth & Syon we helped to critique the designs along with the Photoshop preparation and printing of 16 pieces of digital art which have now been installed in the window spaces of derelict buildings on Brentford High Street.
Brentford Ward Councillor Ruth Cadbury, who attended the grand unveiling said: “It’s a lovely way to brighten up Brentford. I urge people to stop and have a good look at these fantastic images. You get a real atmosphere of the place. It was a real partnership between the schools, the council and the people who work in the area.”
Today represented an exciting finale in our first ever project with the Creative and Media Diploma students at Brentford School for Girls, and The Business Links Team at the Hounslow Education Business Partnership.
Following our recognition as South West London’s greenest company we were keen to promote this achievment and through visits to the company and sessions at the school the students were given the opportunity to decorate one of our Luton vans as a blank canvas to create their own design.
This has been a steep learning curve for the students, who have only been studying the Diploma in Creative and Media for six months! The Girls have had to think on their feet, on their own, collaborate and reflect on and revise their ideas to produce the final artefact, which itself is a testament to their creative zeal and perseverance. The outcome from the team of students is outstanding!
Kelly Dooley, Assistant Headteacher, Brentford School for Girls.
The design seeks to tell a story of environmental impacts and aspirations as well as a need for corporate responsibility, and the newly decorated van has already prompted members of the public to declare their praise: “I just wanted to say that I was sitting in traffic next to one of your vans when I saw that you had won an local environmental award, so decided to look at your website. Its got more information and a better thought out strategy that some FTSE companies! I’d like to nominate Allsignsgroup for an international environmental award!”
“This project has been a brilliant opportunity for the students to work closely with a local company on a real scenario. For all involved, the school, the company, and the HEBP, supporting the students at Brentford School has inspired us all to explore further initiatives to ensure the relationship continues to expand and develop”.
Garth Buckle MBE, The Business Links Team, Hounslow Education Business Partnership.
We are often asked to do some weird and wonderful things, so the call to donate old pvc banners to help protect what is believed to be the oldest surviving all-steel coach anywhere in the UK was something we simply couldn’t turn down!
Built in 1907 for the City & South London Railway (now the Northern Line), this coach now resides at the Electric Railway Museum and until recently was exposed to both the elements and local grafitti artists. Its steel frame construction makes the coach especially prone to rust, and at 100+ years old, much of it out in the open, it has now seriously deteriorated.
So, enter our banners which were most recently used to promote U2’s new album! We are desparate to recycle as much commercial waste as possible, and as the picture depicts they were a perfect fit, providing the much needed protection the coach requires.
Covering it up is the first stage of a plan to arrest the rust! Thanks to Allsignsgroup (and Bono!) for all your help!
Dave Burbridge, Electric Railway Museum Limited.
As part of our plan to offer regular snippets of information and advice, we are dedicating this, our first discussion piece, to the benefits of using and switching to LED lighting for illuminated lettering, signage and built up lettering.
So there you have it: a very brief explanation as to why LEDs are gaining more and more popularity as each day goes by.
Signage lighting and illumination is perhaps a subject that scares some on the basis of being too technical or complex, but while this may certainly have been the case with more traditional forms of illumination and neon, LEDs seem to provide an easy and cost effective solution to even the most demanding customer needs. Intricate letter designs with shallow returns, or serif style fonts are now completely achievable, together with a raft of key, cost saving benefits, some of which are listed above.
We were delighted when Linda James first knocked on our door asking if she could relieve us of as much waste banner and packaging material as we had, and even more interested into what she was actually going to do with it?? Well as well as being a local artist, one of Linda’s main passions is to engage with primary schools as part of the Creative Partnerships project. Here she explores the subject of how can children’s knowledge of science and architecture impact on the design of creative learning environments and their own creative learning?
Linda also addresses the area of how and to what effect businesses like ours can engage with their local community, an issue already close to our hearts and a key area of our own corporate responsibility strategy.
So as the pictures demonstrate, our own passion for recycling has taken on a new angle and a further engagement for us in working with the local community.
For Linda, preventing materials from going to landfill is paramount, and our relationship has allowed her to develop an awareness of recycling on a bigger scale than otherwise might have been possible in terms of building large outdoor structures. It has also meant that the children she works with have changed their understanding of sustainability and how to use materials and make structures that are built to last!
The support, encouragement and materials from Allsigns has meant that as an artist working in other educational contexts I have had a ready supply of interesting materials to inspire scientists, teachers and young people. Linking up with Allsigns has also given us both the opportunity to extend the reach of our social responsibility work into other areas we have in common.
Linda James, Educe
Reducing our baseline emissions by 30% by 2013 is the headline target for the company to run in parallel with a series of carbon offset projects provided by The CarbonNeutral Company with whom we have once again renewed our carbon offset partnership.
We are now in our fifth year as a carbon neutral sign company, and our new carbon certification will tie in with our wider sustainability initiatives, and add weight to our journey towards ISO 14001 accreditation which we also hope to achieve early in 2009.
This time round we have 472 tonnes of C02 with our investment being channeled into a portfolio of resource conservation schemes (energy efficiency, methane recovery and low carbon fuel switches as examples) and renewable energy projects that seek to produce power from sources like wind, hydro, biomass, and waste products like biogas.
One specific project that will receive our support is the SELCO Solar Project where SELCO (the Solar Electric Light Company) designs and sells solar lighting systems in rural India. The systems replace kerosene lamps and the project aims to reduce emissions by 34,500 tCO2 between 2002-2012.
Becoming the greenest business in Hounslow was one thing, but winning the South West London Green Guardian Awards, covering the boroughs of Kingston, Sutton, Merton, Wandsworth, Richmond, and Croydon, was just amazing! The awards ceremony at Epsom Race Course confirmed just that last Friday night as we competed against blue chip opposition to claim the top prize which was presented by Arctic explorer Pen Hadow.
Gaining recognition on such a grand scale, especially for a business like Allsignsgroup, goes a long way to repay the time and effort put in by so many people to become a more responsible business. Our first forays into adopting environmental policies were more on demand than any corporate desire to do the right thing, and by our own admission we “were horrendous recyclers”. However those days are long gone, and we now understand the competitive advantages that can be gained from having a robust CSR policy.
We have saved a small fortune by recycling our waste and cutting energy consumption. Client relationships have grown stronger and new business has been won in areas where we were previously less competitive. The business case for becoming a corporate and socially responsible company is therefore clear and it has set us apart from our competitors.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, sent a congratulatory message to all the finalists saying:
I am absolutely thrilled to send on my congratulations to all those nominated, and the triumphant winners, of this year’s Green Guardian Awards. The amazing work being rewarded here is truly inspirational, and it demonstrates the real difference we can all make in making London greener and cleaner.
Well, thank you Boris! We are thrilled to have received such a fantastic accolade.
The first ever Hounslow Green Guardian Awards saw us fend off the borough’s finest to scoop the Green Business prize and qualify for the regional South West London Awards to be held next month.
The award for us is recognition of our continued contribution to the London Borough of Hounslow’s committment to making the area a cleaner and greener place to live. The judges picked up on the success of our recycling scheme that has helped to reduce significantly the amount of waste that the borough currently sends to landfill, and of the efforts of our very own cartoon character ‘Ray Sourceful’ who helps us to promote the environmental message amongst staff.
We are just delighted to have won this year’s Green Business Award! For everyone at Allsignsgroup, being recognized locally for operating a business responsibly, is fantastic and further proves the business case for going green!
Mike Freely, Managing Director, Allsignsgroup
INCA’s amazing Spyder 320 printers are capable of high speed outdoor-ready direct printing onto almost any substrate: glass, dibond, correx and acrylics up to 30mm thick. Octink print using Fujifilm Sericol’s UviJet CMYK inkset with 2 extra colours: light magenta and light cyan. This, coupled with the Inca’s use of small drop printheads, means smoother colour transitions that minimise the graininess of light colours such as skin tones.
What this means for our customers is a fabulous long-lasting quality print and even faster turnaround. It also cuts material wastage as the print is no longer mounted onto the final substrate.
Direct to substrate printing is clearly the way forward, and we have 2 INCA Spyder 320 machines for super-fast runaround to make sure your tight print deadline is met - every time.
